Haute So Fabulous Travels

Essential Dining; The Dublin Edition I

TravelRebecca O'ByrneComment

Perhaps it happens people living in all cities that while discovering new places that blow you away in your own, you think.. wow you could be in *insert another city you consider chic AF*. Well this seems to have happened me a few times lately in Dublin while dining out. Taking in something that enveloped my senses right here on my doorstep, I was transported elsewhere - something I love + appreciate is where good food + great design works wonders in elevating the vibe of new experiences. And while, of course, I love my home city of Dublin, you sometimes can’t ignore that inner, well.. unintended snob, that comes alive when tricked into thinking you could be anywhere else.

So, yes Dublin has really been impressing me lately with hot spots where not only has the food most definitely been something to write home about but the vibes have been majorly on point too. A solid favourite (if three visits in two + a half weeks doesn’t scream obsessed I don’t know what does) is definitely ROW which, in my mind, gives New York, London and Paris a run for their money. The food is diviiiine.. like majorly wow + the atmosphere contests that of Raf’s in New York or perhaps The Barbary in London. Perfection in a nutshell.

Here are my favourite restaurants in Dublin right now..

ROW

As I mentioned above, ROW is unmissable. The latest venture of Dublin’s renowned brother-duo, Marc + Conor Bereen, ROW is elevated beyond words with a self proclaimed mission to “capture the imagination of Dublin’s cultured, well-traveled food + wine aficionados”; something they do with utter perfection.

Beyond an incredible wine selection that makes organic the only way, the menu at ROW consists of 8 - 10 plates plus a smaller collection of snacks all with fresh Irish produce weaving it’s way throughout the experience. One of the (yes three) times I was at the restaurant recently was with two of my cousins, visiting from NY. We ordered the entire menu + without fail, each plate spoke to us collectively as “the best dining experience we’ve had in a while”. And that’s saying a lot for three girls who all recently went wild on dining out in Manhattan while I was visiting them there. TOP of my list.

ALLTA Bar

I’ve been lucky enough to experience all renditions of ALLTA, from it’s current representation in Grand Canal Docks + the original to it’s pop-up in Slane Castle as a most genius response to lockdown restrictions during COVID + the car park situation for their winter garden restaurant on the 5th floor of St Andrews carpark - each an energy of somewhere else entirely. Somewhere chic, elevated. And ALLTA Bar is no different thanks to the master of it all, Niall Davidson. An absolute must in it’s own right, it’s not just to be considered if you can’t get a booking in the main restaurant, this part of the ALLTA experience is wholly got it going on. Think amazing DJ sets - like the kind where Shazam is repeatedly open on my phone trying to capture everything, great bites + amazing cocktails - frankly I’m not a drinker so it’s the non-alcohol ones for me + they are ** chefs kiss ** perfection. Oh + the desserts are incredibly delightful, so uniquely put together with tastes you wouldn’t imagine possible. ALLTA itself deserves a spot here itself but I decided to give the place of love to it’s fun, cooler, younger sister which for me is always the energy I love in anything, the slightly cooler vibe.

THE BUTCHERS GRILL

I verge very closely to admitting total (albeit, nothing to do with Irish catholic) shame in myself that it took me forever to get my ass to this Dublin classic. I think I just always considered it a red meat joint simply for those who enjoy a really luxe steak. However, despite the many meals I could’ve enjoyed here had I not been so I don’t really eat red meat, it was worth the wait. Every bite. I went with a friend who loves a great steak + of course it doesn’t disappoint on that front but beyond that for those like me, the other selections of fish options are phenomenal. From gammas + tuna tostados that will break your heart, I was that annoying person that kept saying.. wow, like wooooow at every new bite. I mean, I’m late to this party but hell I will be here till the end.

ORWELL ROAD

Ok, this one is another brainchild of Marc + Conor Bereen. ORWELL ROAD. Somewhere that had been on my list for quite some time, my Husband + I went on a date night here + loved it from beginning to end. Another place where it’s more than just great food, the atmosphere is intimate with an attention to detail that really shows in absolutely everything at ORWELL ROAD. A in saying that, in everything the Breen’s bring to life. One of the main focuses of the food is around sustainable sourcing which emphasises incredible Irish ingredients that, when brought together by head chef Daniel Hannigan, generate the essence of truly incredible dining without the fuss of the fine dining formalities. A delight in every way.

NOTE

One of the things I love most about going out for dinner is the idea of discovering new things, especially the vibe. I love somewhere where small/er plates are on point + the opportunity to taste + experience different dishes is on the cards. NOTE is just that. And then some. Energetic at it’s core, yet equally understated with a touch of European cool, this wine bar come bistro - super retro cool for Dublin - is a really sleek place for a date night or a long evening of slow eating enjoyed with friends. The food at NOTE is Mediterranean by nature with a menu of dishes bold + confident, leaving you considering ordering just about everything. The staff are so knowledgable, friendly + efficient which brought together with NOTE’s incredibly tasty food, a wine list worth it’s weight in gold + the perfect amount of retro vibes, is worth considering this your cue to book your table immediately..

ETTO

Since it’s opening in 2013, ETTO has remained top of all the lists as one of Dublin’s best restaurants. It’s been one of those that when anyone asks me, I recommend without a second of thought. A tiny sweet premises on Merrion Row ETTO has been ahead of the trend when it comes to small plates + a relaxed yet elevated dining experience since before it was cool to do something so “off “ the beaten track. With an emphasis on seasonal locally sourced ingredients, the menu is a delight for those who enjoy contemporary cooking in a manner of grazing a perfect selection of small plates or if you’re feeling it, the full-on cote de boeuf experience. Every time I’ve been to ETTO, I can’t help but fall in love with it a little more + can see just why this award-winning eatery remains top of the IYKYK list!

LUNA

We celebrated my birthday at LUNA this year + it was such a delight. I’d been meaning to go for years + simply just never got around to it with living abroad + then the pandemic turning life upside down. However, it was worth the wait + not just that it was my birthday. From the moment we arrived till the second we left, I couldn’t help but fall so in love with Dublin + the idea that we are becoming more + more a truly wholesome city with a cosmopolitan touch. First off, I want to note that the staff at LUNA were so incredibly beautiful in every way that I emailed the restaurant the following morning to commend them on the most hospitable experience we’d had in a long time. It can seem small but when you’re met with friendly + enthusiastic service staff who hold a well-educated knowledge of what they’re doing + the importance of kindness for the customer, it elevates dining out to another level. In recent time I’ve found you can often feel to be an inconvenience for staff when asking questions at a restaurant + this just wasn’t the case. Kindness always always blows me away. And that was just the beginning of a very memorable experience at LUNA. The food was insane. We did the tasting menu + not one thing disappointed. Paired with exceptional cocktails.. I mean like, exceptional, we left on a happy-tummy high of the perfect amount of plates tested + loved + cocktails to literally write home about. I highly recommend LUNA if you’re looking for somewhere to celebrate a special occasion or are in town for a visit.

AMY AUSTIN

AMY AUSTIN is the perfect amount cool paired with ample amounts of sh*t-hot-not-to-be-missed wine bar + restaurant to add to your Dublin hit-list!! The ideal little spot to get some time with your girl over some delicious small plates + a really great glass of wine, it’s got that European aura down to a tee. Casual on the fashionable side, AMY AUSTIN is splendidly intimate with capacity for just 30, loud but vibe-y music that brings the atmosphere of sassy sophistication to life + a menu that in ordering jut the right amount leaves you with a yearning to return pronto. Again, another place where the staff are incredibly helpful + friendly, it’s mission to burst with energy at every level is achieved with sheer we-re-not-even-trying-to-be-this-cool excellence. Loved a summer evening here with a friend + absolutely recommend.

Book here at AMYAUSTIN.IE

COPPINGER

Very much an elevated execution of it’s original take, COPPINGER is most definitely a must for all + any occasion. Masterfully balancing a highly stylish energy with culinary excellence, the recently revamped restaurant is a perfect spot for a casual bistro-cool lunch or a more in-depth date night dinner. Offering a mix of Mediterranean-inspired small plates along with heartier mains, it’s an obvious creation of the Breen brothers (who’s other spots on this list include ROW + Orwell Road) yet in their ever evolving expansion of their pristine brand. Unique yet classic, I really loved a work lunch here recently + absolutely recommend for whatever the occasion. A brilliant one that impresses beyond it’s well-known previous self.

HSF Wellness Guides; The New York City Edition

Travel, WellbeingRebecca O'Byrne

Regular schedules + routines break while traveling; no matter how type A one is (or, admittedly I am), it’s inescapable that what you routinely practice at home - when you do it + how you implement it - isn’t as perfectly guaranteed to remain so solidly intact while away from the certainty of what you make happen each day in ‘normal’ life + trust me, even the best plans + intentions get blindsided by the natural, albeit wonderful, upset that comes with travel to anyone’s otherwise flowing schedule. And so while routine in it’s at-home version might be different while away, what does come with us is the approach we have to our own well-being + the rituals + practices that make us feel good no matter where we may be. What’s important while away is focusing on what we can do from our usual groove to make us feel our best + with that in mind, I’ve pieced together some of my favourite wellness locations + practices to try in New York City, one of my heart’s dearest home-away-from-home cities.

Milan; An Aesthetes Dream

TravelRebecca O'Byrne
milan travel guide

As someone who comes to life in places that evoke a sense of inspired creativity, Milan is definitely a fun place for me to be. Taking a look at some of the places I love in a city I adore, I’m thrilled for my inner aesthete to share just a moment of reverence + appreciation for the parts of Milan that, in all their glory don’t really need to be explained but simply cherished, those contemporary touches that ignite a deep love of design + something only the Italians can do so tastefully.

I’ve been blessed to visit this playful city many times. Most recently, my Love + I spent a few nights, late this summer, one of which was with loved ones after a beautiful few weeks in Lake Como + the remaining just the two of us before catching the train up to Venice - something I absolutely recommend. Each time I visit Milan, I find another part of it I love, another corner previously undiscovered to me + somehow a somewhat deeper appreciation of it’s immensely rich culture + the incomparable vibrancy that makes it so current. What I love most about Milan perhaps are it’s modern touches. The parts of it that speak the beautiful language of contemporary design amid some of it’s more ancient expressions + backdrops. To me, in the most elegant of ways, Milan feels like the bold + more daring little sister to Rome’s more traditional heritage. It is the cooler, more fun one you want to have at your party.

I’ve stayed in several hotels over the years, but one we love + have returned to several times is Room Mate Giulia which was a recommendation from one of my best friends. It is a perfect base thanks to it’s central location while it’s amazing price point + cute vibe make for the ideal place from which to embark upon your Milanese adventure. From here everything is pretty much within walking distance (I walk a lot on city breaks so perhaps check out your own tolerance on maps) + Milan, like any city, is best enjoyed on foot, taking in the Italian capital of fashion be it on sunnier summer days or chic-ly wrapped up in your winter layers.

I always start my days in Milan at a local tabaccaio - those idyllic neighbourhood cafés where locals routinely pop in for their elegant morning espresso + a quick chat before heading off to capture their day. This most recent trip was spent taking in some of my favourite museums, coffee stops + simply strolling endlessly with my Love. In alignment with the very minimalist perspective + way of living, some of the most incredible places for me to visit are always Fondazione Prada + Armani/Silos. Both of these incredible museums warrant unlimited time to explore, relax into + soak up the endless inspired energy each is so bursting with. And then when it comes to a more old-world Italian vibe, Villa Necchi + Casa degli Atellani definitely bring the Italiano energy.

Of course there are the local masterpieces too; the famous Gothic Duomo cathedral, La Scala + Da Vinci’s The Last Supper mural are all part of the Milan experience - that wonderful aspect of Europe I love so much where ancient creations are simply just there.. to be enjoyed + embraced but without that intense commercialization of modern living. There’s an unspoken sense of cool in the coolness of it all. From the old to the new, Milan has it all. And it’s deservedly unapologetic about it too.

Postcards from Venice

TravelRebecca O'Byrne
venice-travel-guide.jpeg

Recently, en route home from some time in Italy we decided to take advantage of the fact that, for the first time in 100 years, dolphins had been seen in Venice. With the pandemic having had an obvious effect on life as we once knew it, one of the positives is that the planet has had a second to breathe; albeit seemingly a little too late. With the decline in tourists visiting the city over the course of the past 18 months, the canals of Venice are playing host to types of wildlife that haven’t dared come near the polluted waters in over a century.

Having never been to Venice myself I was excited to experience it for the first time. So, of course, first things first, I booked a date night at Harry’s Bar. Home to the Bellini (my go-to cocktail of choice.. well that or a French ‘75) not to mention a whole series of historical + fabulous moments, glamorous visitors + seductive secrets, Harry’s Bar is a not-so-secret must when visiting this distinctively remarkable city.

Thankfully my younger self no longer plays a part in how we now travel. The perfectionistic part of me used to think it was imperative to see + experience absolutely everything possible no matter how short our stay somewhere. Now, without that pressure to do it all, travel is a treat to be slowly enjoyed at a much deeper level. The rich culture + historic nature of Venice is overwhelmingly intriguing + somewhere that requires little but a desire to stroll with ease + soak it all up. Beyond it’s beauty, Venice is undoubtedly awe inspiring. One must stop to take it in; the extraordinary way in which the city was first imagined + then brought to life is as though to be immersed, almost 1500 years after it’s birth, in beauty that not only envelopes your soul but transports to you an entirely other world long before this digital, fast-paced life we live in. For this one we put our phones away (ok when I say phones I mean, more honestly, just Google Maps) + got entirely lost each day, strolling through the pretty streets + taking a water taxi to another part of the city; all for the simple pleasure of exploring. Unlike most who visit Venice, we didn’t take a Gondola ride through the canals - perhaps an obvious mistake on our part but it felt extremely touristy + as a walker, we were content to stay on foot.

Experiences I loved were, of course, the Prada Foundation, our sweet date night at Harry’s Bar, the glamour of the Aman, sailing past ‘Building Bridges’ by Lorenzo Quinn by night + visiting the Peggy Guggenheim collection. On the contemporary side of things, I was so thrilled to water taxi over to the island of Certosa to see the Doug Aitken kaleidoscopic catwalk which was commissioned specifically by Saint Laurent’s creative director Anthony Vaccarello for the fashion houses menswear spring summer 2021 fashion show which took place just before we arrived. The installation was out-of-this-world incredible. Breathtaking. Unfortunately only there for a short two week stint but Doug Aitken’s mirrored house in the Swiss Alps is one of his more permanent structures to check out.

Back to Venice, the endless jaw-dropping architecture + the sheer way in which it was constructed has to cement it’s place as the coolest, most dramatically interesting city in Europe. Three nights though, I will admit, is perhaps just one too long. Were we to revisit, it would be for just two + with a specific reason to be there; say the Biennale or one day perhaps, a visit to the Opera or something fabulous like that. And without a doubt, any future visits will be out of season. It’s a place with a sense that, unless you could magically remove all the tourists (+ we were blessed to be there without that many in July this year as Europe scrambles to recover from the pandemic) needs to be experienced intimately. Venice, were it a verb, is a moment in life to immerse yourself in the depth of it’s charm, a moment to savour as privately as possible.

In a word, Barry’s is K.I.L.L.E.R. Killer as in the most insane ass-kicking workout you can do, in any city you might find yourself in (they have locations all over the planet now). Working from the second you step inside the Red Room to the second you leave, the session is different every time with a focus on a different body area each day of the week. However what remains the same is the treadmill to weights format and the fact that whether it’s your first time or your a Barry’s seasoned pro, you will leave on a naturally occurring endorphin induced high - not to mention a stiff and sore body (in all the good ways though of course). My favorite London location has to be the London Central or London East.

T H E L O N D O N E D I T I O N

Primely situated on the edge of Soho and just a seven-minute walk from Oxford Circus, The London EDITION is a faultless blend of edgy elegance. The brainchild of American entrepreneur Ian Schrager, the once co-founder of Studio 54, it’s a bucket list London stay that doesn’t disappoint. Upon stepping inside, one is left somewhat open-mouthed at the splendour of the lobby. Swiftly captured by the sheer opulence, it’s a room within itself, doubling as a meeting space come day or night with it’s statement, low-lit bar and stylish seating area. A destination of sorts, the hotel conquers the quintessential magnificence of London with it’s social hub spirit. Rooms at The Edition are a minimalist affair; one that lovers of contemporary interiors will really appreciate. Cosy in a chalet way, the rooms are a true escape.

The London Edition is a new generation of luxury with an attainable feel at the heart of exactly what makes London have that London feel.

T H E S T A N D A R D

If you know, you know and knowing starts and ends at the Standard’s latest addition in London. With existing locations in New York, California and, now, the Maldives, The Standard’s British outpost was it’s first outside the the US, opening in 2019. It has quickly and undoubtedly become thee place to wake up to and party at till the lights go down for those who know

Founded by hotelier André Balazs - who’s other properties include Chiltern Firehouse in London, The Mercer in New York City, and Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles - the Standard is located directly across from King’s Cross Station, towering above Euston Road. Housed in the former Camden Town Hall Annex the building boasts a very distinct Brutalist architecture of the 1970’s. Inside too plays homage to those 70’s vibes. Designed by Shawn Hausman, with the aim to be in complete contrast to the greyness of London, visitors are treated to bright red ceilings met with striped wooden walls in the ground-level offerings and can treat themselves to any of the many themed areas specifically designed to lounge around in.

The lobby lounge with its library setting plays homage to the buildings original use where the Sounds studio (yes the hotel’s VERY own recording studio) holds weekly talks and live music. Next door to the lounge is the now infamous Double Standard bar, headed up by executive chef Adam Rawson where guests can expect a casual - yet always cool - drinks and dining experience. Also part of the hotel’s restaurant offerings is Isla, also headed up by Rawson and the recently launched Decimo by Michelin-starred Chef Peter Sanchez-Iglesias who merges the Spanish cuisine of his family with his deep love of Mexico, created for his first ever London restaurant.

The rooms are witty, in a sense playfully lighthearted - they are bright (AF) and come in a variety of sizes and shapes. From the typical London small to suite size, there’s something common to all and it’s the outlandish swanky kitsch vibes - think curved walls, retro style lighting, bold Wallace Sewell geometric-patterned bedspreads, deep blue carpets and the bathrooms which are adorned with pink-and-black tiled walls. It’s V seventies without fail.

Whether you’re there to stay or just to play, The Standard London is the absolute chic!

T H E N E D

This 11-floor hotel and member’s club bares some family resemblance to it’s founders now infamous ability to create a vibe with each new Soho House opening.. however, The Ned is really it’s own thing. Mature and more decidedly grown-up than it’s younger, party-lover counterparts, it’s Edwardian grandeur plays into a more opulent clientele looking for London glamour at it’s absolute best!

The £200 million creation took four years to complete and was worth the wait.. and every penny it seems. It’s a vibe-seekers haven with everything apart from the rooftop and underground Vault Bar open to non-members. The rooms themselves ooze opulence and elegance and are adorned with magnificent intricacies. There are armchairs and big luxurious sofas in lavishly appointed colours like rose and chartreuse and the four-poster beds come in mahogany, while the light situation is rather on point - think palm-tree shaped chandeliers and uniquely shaped lamps bringing the mood to another level. It’s luxury chic, in the true sense of the meaning.

It’s got plenty to see and do, with 252 bedrooms to chose from, nine restaurants, 15 bars, a spa, a barber shop, a boxing gym, two pools and as one would rightly expect at The Ned, a vintage cabinet is situated at the door to the old Tapestry Room, with specifically designed compartments to ensure the highly secured storage of one’s bowler hat. I mean.. what else could one want, right? It would seem The Ned has it all.

A C E H O T E L

Whether you’re a trendy traveller or simply on the lookout for somewhere to ‘co-work’ with the too-cool-for-school Shoreditch crew, the Shoreditch outpost of the Ace Hotel is definitely your first stop in London. Located on Shoreditch High Street and just a 10 minute stroll north of Liverpool Street Station, the hotel is a hotspot for the cities achingly cool crowd. Upon entering through the main entrance, you’re met with a fetching first impression: the lobby with it’s concrete walls, dark wood floors and chipboard ceilings set the tone around the main feature of the lobby which is the endless array of hipsters holding meetings and working away on their laptops in the hotel’s, a space that has infamously become that of a co-workers heaven.

From NYC to LA, Chicago to Palm Springs and Seattle to Pennsylvania, staying the night is always a treat at the Ace. Upstairs, with seven different categories, rooms are in complete contrast with the lobby’s dark characteristics and are enveloped in the freshness of stark white walls and industrial style lighting, all adorned with Ace appropriate mid-century modern furniture. It’s innately and authentically Ace at it’s core, yet very East London in it’s detailed eccentricities - there are acoustic guitars on the walls with each room hosting it’s own quirky elements, think fun amenities like record players and vinyls.

Hoi Polloi is the hotel’s independently popular brasserie style restaurant and is typically buzzing with a vibe-y atmosphere. The menu is extensive, serving everything from oysters to burgers. For coffee lovers too there’s Bulldog Edition which serves (delicious) coffee and on-the-go pastries, small bites and juices.

With three locations in London - Shoreditch, Holborn and Southwark - The Hoxton has quickly become a favourite of trend seeking travellers in appreciation of a quality hotel stay at reasonable price points. No matter which of the groups London settings you decide to frequent, you’re sure to fall in love with each destinations ability to fit right in with it’s selected surroundings. From Shoreditch to Holborn to Southwark, each Hoxton has it’s own interesting finishings while collectively boasting a combination of old-fashioned elegance alongside elements of bold playfulness.

Like The Ace, it’s very London. Each lobby is full of creatives hosting power breakfast meetings and click-click-clicking away on their Macs. Sitting for a morning coffee makes for very good people-watching. On the food front, each hotel has it’s own in-house restaurant, the Hoxton Grill in Shoreditch, Hubbard + Bell and Chicken Shop in Holborn and Albie and Seabird in Southwark.

In Shoreditch, the rooms come in four different sizes, from smallest to biggest, the ‘shoebox’, ‘cosy’, ‘roomy’, and the nine ‘concept’ rooms, each of which have been designed by a local artist. The nine ‘concept’ rooms cannot be booked however, only requested upon reservation, so fingers crossed you’ll be luck out when booking. In Holborn and Southwark, the room sizes are a similar system with one or two more sized rooms available.

All-in-all the group attracts a loyal repeat customer for it’s atmosphere and attractive prices.

Residing at The Broad is Eli and Edythe Broad's private collection of post-war art works. With a stirringly large collection of over 2,000 pieces from 200 artists the philanthropic couple personally financed the $140million building in which they share their love of the arts with the general public. The building itself is a masterpiece designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler.

Having commenced their love of cultural investing over five decades ago, the Broad's collection is unquestionably one of the most extensive personal accumulations in the world and the couple have cleverly built it up on the base belief that “the greatest art collections are built when the art is being made”. And so it is that it plays home to iconic works of art from some of the most notable artists in the world including Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Robert Rauschenberg, Kara Walker, Cy Twombly and Jasper Johns - alongside a variety of incredible new up-and-coming artists that the couple consider to be worth investing in right now.

With just 250 of the 2,000 pieces on show at any one time, The Broad boasts a permanent line of eager art enthusiasts who cue up daily for up to an hour and half just to gain access. With free general admission, it's best to book in advance to guarantee entry and avoid any disappointment.

First opening to the public in November 1990 by former Chairman of Occidental Petroleum Corporation, Dr. Armand Hammer, the Hammer is one of L.A’s top art spaces. Financed by Occidental, Dr. Hammer had several galleries dedicated to his extensive art collection. Upon his death just three weeks after the opening, the museum began negotiations with UCLA which would see the beginning of a great partnership whereby the college has since managed all operational runnings of the institution. Over time the museum has amassed it’s own very prestigious collection which now holds over 2,000 artworks. Fuelled by varying thematic contemporary exhibitions, historical exhibitions, and contemporary artists’ projects, the museum’s aim is to continually provide important insight into the critical cultural, political and social matters of our time through the artists they work with and the invaluable perspectives they provide while always igniting the imaginations of those who observe, ultimately inspiring change in the way we live and the world we create.

The Hammer is open to the public on a free admission basis.

Also fondly known as Case Study House No. 8, the Eames House is a distinguished landmark of mid-century modern architecture. Designed by husband-and-wife Charles and Ray Eames and constructed in 1949, the house remained their home until their respective passings in 1978 and 1988. Today the house is a sacred sanctuary for lovers of mid-century interiors and design.   It reflects their consideration of life as an act of design itself and remains filled with ‘stuff’ representing the story of their lives and how they lived it. One of the most notable and understood aesthetics the design duo left behind is the Eames Lounge and Ottoman - furniture that today is highly valuable in it’s original form and an often copied piece of work.

Inspired by the remains of the Villa Dei Papiri in Herculaneum and the Roman era, The Getty Villa was originally opened in 1974 by oil magnate, billionaire and art patron J Paul Getty as a way to share his vast collections of Classical and Renaissance-era artworks with the public. With a minimum of 1,200 artefacts on show at any one time, the Getty Villa is a destination spot to lose a few hours of your day, wandering happily through it’s galleries and it’s varying on site exhibitions. Upon it’s initial opening in 1974, the launch was met with mixed reviews from critics. The art itself was received with open arms and applause, however the building encountered incredible criticism from historical and architectural experts who felt the era that inspired it’s creation wasn’t at all reflected correctly. The Villa closed in 1997, with the artworks being move to the Getty Centre, so that the villa could be properly converted into a museum level space, only reopening again 2006. Since it’s reincarnation, the Villa has become a hotspot fo tourists and locals alike and being located at the easterly end of Malibu, getting there can be a day out from the city, stopping at Malibu Farmer’s Market which is open on Sunday’s (come hail, rain or shine) or perhaps a nice date night dinner at Nobu..

Upon dining at Sushi Park though, you just get it. The hype is real. It’s an Omakase situation only at the sushi bar or à la carte options are available if you chose to sit at a table. Menu highlights include allllllll the small plates, the grilled avocado & citrus salad and the delicious coconut curry grain bowl.

8164 W 3rd Street // Sunday - Thursday 6pm - 10pm, Friday and Saturday 6pm - 11pm

Nestled away in the hearty of 3rd Street, this tiny super romantic date night spot is one of the cities most reliable and trusty restaurants. The brasseries style eatery boasts a vanquishing combination of intimate character and delicious fare. Famous for it’s cutesy and intimate, dimly lit courtyard and classic Californian cuisine with ample French touches, you could say it’s a match made in dining out heaven and somewhere that, no matter how many places come and go in Los Angeles, will always be there to stay. The wine list is of note too with an impressibly extensive range, offering bottles from all over the world.

624 South La Brea Avenue // Sunday - Wednesday 8am - 3pm & 5.30pm - 10pm, Thursday - Saturday 8am - 3pm & 5.30pm - 11pm

Replacing one of the most famous restaurants spaces in Los Angeles (previously Campanile), Republique had a hefty expectation placed upon it by simply opening where it has. However, in true LA style, the modern eatery has exceeded all such expectations with it’s contemporary French plates and friendly communal tables. Interiors here are something of a show and nothing short of magnificent with an impressive three kitchens, each opening out onto the main dining space. Along with the cleverly created marketplace-in-a-c courtyard and communal feel, an experience at Republique is a serious education in good dining. Menu highlights include (just about anything on there.. but specifically) the salads, the freshly made white corn agnolotti and the lamb shank or beef short rib. Also for the sake of humanity, do not pass on the bread basket, I repeat, do.not.pass.on.the.bread.basket.

8479 Melrose Avenue, West Hollywood // Sunday - Thursday 6 - 9.30pm, Friday & Saturday 6 - 10.30pm

A large, open space Rosaline is located right at Melrose and La Cienega and stands to be that trusty friend you can reply on for just about anything. Famed for it’s modern yet completely unpretentious take on Peruvian food - think traditional staples like paelle, ceviche and arroz con pollo; it’s got a little something that will suit every kind of eater. The space is cool, playing more in line with LA’s contemporary indoor-outdoor dining movement of late and boasts a Kevin Tsai architecturally-designed interior, bringing a very relaxed and modest feel to your evening out. Menu highlights have to be the crispy calamari marinated in yuzu kosho (a Japanese spice) and the solarito, a lima bean salad with avocados and feta.

8826 Melrose Avenue // Monday - Sunday 5pm - 12.30am

Rightly demanding the title of “the best place in Los Angeles to spot celebrities” Craig’s is that mystical place to experience even just once in a lifetime. Admittedly it’s not much more than overpriced American fare in the menu department and wouldn’t be our first choice for those looking for something mouthwateringly delectable but if you can overlook such details when dining out then it’s the most LA LA can get in terms of people watching. Guests are seated depending on their level of fame and from Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro to Larry King and the Gerbers, George Clooney and Amal, Kate Upton and just about anyone who’s anyone. Go even just for a drink at the bar; the $15 cocktails are worth it just to people watch.

465 La Cienega Boulevard // Wednesday & Thursday & Sunday 5.30pm - 10pm, Friday & Saturday 5.30pm - 11pm

Sexy and playful, this destination style restaurant was a $12 million collaboration between the famously hot-headed Spanish chef José Andrés, hotelier Sam Nazarian and designer Philippe Starck. Bringing to life something of a welcomed yet disorienting feel, the dazzling hotspot is brought together with a shockingly fabulous interior design, a patisserie, a Moss design store, two main dining rooms, a bar and an itinerant palm reader no less. The food is just as nonplussed, offering the likes of foie gras cotton candy and elegant cones filled with caviar which only once eaten can truly be understood; much like the overall experience of The Bazaar, it’s an experience comprehended as something truly special and bazaar.

Rio de Janeiro

TravelRebecca O'ByrneComment

Visiting new and foreign lands is one of my favourite ways to spend my life and in admitting my ignorance in knowing little to almost nothing of Brazil before landing there, I can't quite begin to describe just how fabulous our trip there was last year.

There to attend one of my Love's best friend's wedding just north of Rio in Buzios, we decided to take a little longer in travelling to the other side of the world and added time on either end of the special occasion in order to explore this country so rich in culture, art and an altogether otherworldly authentic way of living that neither of us had ever quite experienced despite both of our insane weakness for travel.

First stop though was Rio. Gosh where to begin in attempting to narrate this somewhat cryptic city that even after spending a long weekend in we left with an overall sense of mystery that unless living as a local one might never quite gain a complete understanding of. Beyond beautiful in it's insanely unrefined yet splendid rawness, it's a definite mix of all sorts of contrasts and differences; darkness and light, poverty and wealth, beach-living and dangerous alleyways. With no doubt an endless array of things to do, people to meet and experiences that will live with you for life, it's full of wonders to explore and experience.

Today I'm thrilled to share with you all that we lived and loved and can most definitely say what brought to life this city as our home if even for use those three short days..

Stay

I love a good boutique hotel. Like Love with a capital L. And Mama Ruisa, our little sanctuary for those three precious nights, sure lived up to all my expectations as one of Rio's most stylish and personal stays. Set in a gated space in one of Rio's trendiest neighbourhoods, Santa Theresa, is the old and stately mansion that once played home to a wealthy Brazilian family and now to guests who wish to find themselves lost in a chic yet very authentic Brazilian experience. From it's stunning decor that brings a touch of French to a strong Brazilian foundation and vastly expansive rooms that make you feel like staying forever to waking each morning to a most magical view of the city from atop Santa Theresa as you have your breakfast on a private balcony and the utmost attentive staff who are there to help you with anything to do with your being in Rio, I cannot recommend this heavenly paradise more.

Somewhere else to consider staying and one our next trip will definitely consist of a night or forever at is Hotel Saint Teresa. We spent two days chilling here, having lunch and generally just loving every moment in the chic surroundings of this precious place. Rustic yet perfectly polished it's so fabulous on every level and the kind of place that if you never left you'd live in heaven forever!

Experience

Unbeknownst to us, and frankly quite the shock, weather wasn't to be on our side during the trip - three days of sunshine out of 16. However, blessed with insane heat and clear blue skies one of the days, one of our favourite parts of Rio was definitely getting to see the city's gorgeous landscape from atop Sugarloaf Mountain. Leaving from Prais Vermelha, a cable car takes you on the first leg of the journey stopping at Urca Mountain (220 meters above sea level). Here you can't help but bow to the breathtaking, 360degree views of the city. Keep going though because even these are nothing to the those that meet you when you reach Sugarloaf Mountain itself, after taking another cable car to the sister mountain sitting right beside it. Towering at 396 meters over sea level you can really see the city in all it's glory, a perfect view of all that rests below including Copacabana Beach, The Christ, Guanabara Bay and the picturesque blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Allotting an entire morning or afternoon, or day even if you have it to sit and read and take photos, is essential to this activity and something that are we to ever return to Rio we shall most definitely be doing again. Next time at sunset which is supposedly so so magical.

To feel at home in a city hanging out in a beautiful park is a must for me to know I've truly spent enough time to feel and truly observe the essence of native life. Our Sunday afternoon spent at Parque Lage was that and so much more. Also known as the Taj Mahal of Rio, Parque Lage is like a postcard you step into and never want to leave and one that despite the likes of Snoop, Pharrell and the Black Eyed Peas having shot some of their biggest music videos there, seems to be overshadowed in travel guides by it's nearby sister park, the Botonical Gardens. The mansion that resides at Parque Lage used to be a private home and is now an art school where exhibitions of all kinds are held.

As people watching is one of our guilty pleasures in life and after a cocktail in the mansions cafe, my Love and I blissed out and spent an entire afternoon hanging out here soaking up the most exquisite scenes that are bound to set your heart alight. The gardens are simply divine, not to mention the amazing sounds of the birds and monkeys that all call it home. Funnily enough too, it was all after a (rather disappointingly clouded) journey up to the see Christ the Redeemer who it turns out overlooks the beautiful scene of Parque Lage below.. although on this cloudy day we still couldn't see him from here either.

Experience

Before we left on our travels, I was honestly a little naive to the dangerous side of Rio. I lived in South Africa for a year when I was just 18 and even then I was a little unaware of being an outsider in such foreign lands. As part of my traveller self though I like that, to go somewhere with an open mind and not let a preconceived judgement determine my experience. I mean I knew on a subconscious level that it's not exactly Disneyland but quite frankly, despite the beauty, I was to learn of just how dangerous a city it is. Paul wouldn't let me watch 'City of God' - the infamous movie about Rio's most notorious favela - before leaving (not to mention us embarking on a walking tour of one of the other favelas during our stay) and thank goodness he was so wise. It's INSANE. I like to pride myself on being a slight badass when it comes to facing real-life situations in the face and in my naivety, off we went with two of our divine friends who were in the city and spent an afternoon on a walking tour of one of the city's largest shanty towns.

Our tour guide was incredible and if you are to one day experience Rio in it's rawest form, there's nobody like him to show you around. He brought us through what is something only your wildest imagination could conjure up. Unlike the townships of Cape Town and the one I worked in in Plettenberg Bay during my time in South Africa, the buildings are of concrete structure and are stronger than most in standing up to the harsh weathers that tear other shanty towns apart around the world. Built on top of each other with literally just enough space to walk between each building, the favela sprawls over miles of acres and is home to some several million people who work here, rear their families and build their daily lives. Our tour guide informed us of how built up it has become and in the past 10 years how much safer it's streets have become in a transformation that has seen drug wars lessened, police enforcement implemented, and the quality of life risen beyond measure for those who call it home. They now even have satellite TV and WiFi - within reason. To us though, it was insane - a world that seems so far from our norm and yet one that once inside you're captivated by it's intensity and almost movie like reality. We learned of how just 10 years ago there is no way even the police would enter, not to mention a white foreigner. Kids running around with machine guns and drug lords killing the next target on their never-ending list of customers in need of their next fix. Life had absolutely no meaning it would seem and those who entered did so at the risk of loosing their life.

It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. I loved it. However I'm not going to lie, we most definitely had a feeling that we were encroaching upon territory that was not ours and although some of the locals see it that we bringing awareness to the situation and also a certain amount of business, it still felt somewhat wrong to be there as a tourist. The scariest part, and the moment in which I realise was most real having since seen "City of God" was when two boys, no more than 12 years old, passed us with guns in their hands. Casually speaking, I got lost in the moment thinking perhaps it was just part of a movie. But sadly no, crime and mortality is still very much part of reality in the favelas in Rio.

Eat & Drink

As we were only there for a short time, restaurants and cocktails weren't our main priority - we just wanted to experience as much as possible. Although having said that, we gave it our best shot. Again, as major sushi lovers we had a divine fix of our favoured cuisine at Yumê which is so much fun. With an aquarium floor upon which you sit to enjoy your evening it's such a beautiful spot for couples. And for a drink before or after, Sobe, located right next door is so cool. The cocktail list is extensive and super tempting, especially as you sit outside under the nights stars.

As I already mentioned, drinks and a late lunch at Parque Lage are the ultimate way to spend any liquid-y lunch and dining at the stunning Térèze at Hotel Saint Teresa is sheer luxury of the chicest kind. Not to mention somewhere to chill by the pool with a cocktail or coffee after.

Somewhere to delve into the true Brazilian foodie experience is Porcāo Rios, the city's infamous all-you-can-eat meat restaurant. Whether you do the buffet style serving and control your own portions or go all out with the table service - the waiters continue to bring food after food to the table until you flip the coloured pig on the tablet to red, you're sure to get a real Brazilian dinner affair.

Another place we adored - in all that sparkles on one of the most beautiful date nights ever, was AprazívelHere you will fall head-over-heels in love with Rio by night. The views of the city are breathtaking and take you away from the world. Dinner here is a treat and something to cherish for a night of celebrations. Make sure that when reserving you ask for a table outside wth the view the restaurant is famous for.

All in all our first time in Rio was beyond amazing. Weather might not have shown up but despite that, to experience people, places and things so new to us was enthralling far beyond anything a day laying on Copacabana Beach would've allowed. Although visiting it is a must if you've come this far, no matter the weather..

Despite all that's been going on, this past year I've been blessed to take several trips to Paris, one of my favourite cities in the world. My Love has been working there quite a bit and so I've simply never been able to resist fluttering my wings and following my heart. As one might put it, Paris is a constant master of any romantic heart, tempting and enticing with every meeting..
